Food and Hunger: A Small Effort with Love #BAD11

A few days ago I was watching Jon Stewart. He was talking about human rights which are granted by the government and billed as "God given rights." His comment which struck me was: "Come on. If God was giving out rights, wouldn't he say things like, the right to enough to eat?"

As we all know many people do not have enough to eat. Yes, all around the world but also in our own communities. Our own community is where we live and where we have the best chance of doing something about it. It does not even have to be a major effort. If we all do something small and with love it will make a difference.

I am a gardener. My garden always produces much more food than my family can eat or preserve. I take the excess to the local Probation and Parole office where it is free for the taking. Having worked as a Probation and Parole Officer I know the need for food of many of the offenders living in our community. It is not much but its a little effort done with love.

So what else can we do in our community?

Food banks are running low, donate to them.
Volunteer to help out at a local food pantry.
Become a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Don't throw food away. If you have too much, share it. Chances are you know someone who needs it.

If we all make a little effort, together we can have a big impact.

The handcrafted peace necklace pictured here is in beautiful blues and browns. I love the chubby turquoise gemstone coin beads and they're such a nice size. I combined them with some vintage India glass beads I had tucked away in gorgeous teal and root beer. Today is Blog Action Day. Bloggers from all around the world are having a global conversation about an issue that rarely gets the attention it deserves: water.

The problem of scarce clean water:

Nearly 1 billion people lack access to clean water, which causes a litany of struggles, diseases and even death.
40 Billion Hours: African women walk over 40 billion hours each year carrying cisterns weighing up to 18 kilograms to gather water, which is usually still not safe to drink.
38,000 Children a Week: Every week, nearly 38,000 children under the age of 5 die from unsafe drinking water and unhygienic living conditions.
Wars Over Water: Many scholars attribute the conflict in Darfur at least in part to lack of access to water. A report commissioned by the UN found that in the 21st century, water scarcity will become one of the leading causes of conflict in Africa
A Human Right: In July, to address the water crisis, the United Nations declared access to clean water and sanitation a human right over. But we are far from implementing solutions to secure basic access to safe drinking water.

Water over-consumption in industrialized countries - While the developing world faces a water crisis, those in industrialized countries consume far more than their fair share:

Food Footprint: It takes 24 liters of water to produce one hamburger. That means it would take over 19.9 billion liters of water to make just one hamburger for every person in Europe.
Technology Footprint: The shiny new iPhone in your pocket requires half a liter of water to charge. That may not seem like much, but with over 80 million active iPhones in the world, that's 40 million liters to charge those alone.
Fashion Footprint: That cotton t-shirt you're wearing right now took 1,514 liters of water to produce, and your jeans required an extra 6,813 liters.
Bottled Water Footprint: The US, Mexico and China lead the world in bottled water consumption, with people in the US drinking an average of 200 bottles of water per person each year. Over 17 million barrels of oil are needed to manufacture those water bottles, 86 percent of which will never be recycled.

The tagline for my business is a Martin Luther King, Jr quotation:
"I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."

That pretty much sums up how I feel at this juncture of my life.

I’m an aging flower child who teeters between believing that world peace will be achieved in my lifetime and a growing fear that it won’t. The daily news often overwhelms me. Is there more violence in the world today? Or does it just seem like it because we now live in a global village with (what passes for) news being so readily accessible. Story after story, issue after issue, all rooted in hate.

For years I’ve written letters, chatted with my elected representatives, participated in protests… you know the drill. Does it do any good? I have to believe it does. If only because I feel better for having participated; for having simply sent my energy out there in the universe; for taking a stand. It’s like being part of a prayer circle for strangers. One prays and meditates, sending out the energy of love and compassion. To not participate is to acquiesce to hate.

Every day I think about becoming peaceful. Cultivating love and compassion within myself sounds easy, but can be difficult. It‘s sometimes hard to practice patience, stifle anger, reach out to others. However, contrasted with the Big Picture that is the world, it is a small thing. I can try to give joy to just one other person each day. Lighten their heart for just a moment. Pass on a bit of love like tossing a pebble into the ocean. Sometimes I can see the ripples.

I imagine a world with individuals acting from a place of love and compassion and I know for sure that’s where I want to live. It is a reminder that peace actually does begin with me. And I’ve decided to stick with love.

1 jar apricot preserves
¼ cup honey
3 tbsp horseradish
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp chopped fresh thyme
¼ tsp dried crushed red pepper.
Whisk together in a small saucepan. Cook over midium heat, whisking frequently, 3-4 minutes or until thoroughly heated and sauce is a pourable consistency. Use immediately or store in an airtight container in refrigerator up to one week.

Cucumber Soup Recipe from World Peace Jewelry

This time of year I'm usually overwhelmed by cucumbers. So, I'm always n the lookout for recipes other than pickles. Because, let's face it, there are only so many pickles two people can eat or give away. This recipe for Cucumber Soup uses some of those green things and is a cool treat in hot, hot August.

2 cups half and half divided
4 cucumbers, peeled, seeded and chopped
2 green onions, sliced
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 16 oz container sour cream
½ tsp salt
½ tsp hot sauce ½ cup sour cream
1 tbsp chopped fresh dill
Process 1 cup half and half and next 3 ingredients in a blender until smooth.
Combine cucumber mixture, remaining half and half, 16 oz sour cream, salt, and hot sauce. Cover; chill 8 hours

Stir together ½ cup sour cream and dill; add a dollop on each serving. Yield 1 ½ quarts.
